NM: SAN JUAN CO. 1910 M.

TX: CULBERSON CO. 2000 M.

General Description.—Logan and Black (1979): Extreme NW corner Culberson Co., Texas, ca. 2.5 mi NW Guadalupe Peak, Guadalupe Mts., elev. 2000 m. Map showing positions of excavations, profile of cave, etc., as Fig. 1 of Black and Logan (1979). They excavated two trenches in summer 1974; correlation between is based only on appearance of Sorex cinereus and Cryptotis in 30 to 40-cm level of Tr. 1 and 10 to 20-cm level of Tr. 2. Although apparently not stated, seems to have been excavated by 10-cm levels (which is how report of fauna is given)— gives a problem because natural stratigraphy doesn't follow. In Tr. 1, Unit 1 from surface to 15 cm; Unit 2 from 15-25 cm; Unit 3 25-45 cm (primarily of sloth dung— vertebrate material from this unit at 30-40 cm level); Unit 4, 40-70 cm. In Tr. 2, Unit 1 from surface to 6 or 7 cm; Unit 2 of calcite up to 3 cm; Unit 3 from 6-10 cm to ca. 40 cm.

Comments.—Specimens catalogued in vertebrate paleontology collections of The Museum of Texas Tech Univ. (TTU-P), loc. no. TTU-TEX-2. Molluscs deposited at Dallas Mus. Nat. Hist. (Logan and Black 1979). Logan and Black (1979) postulate that climatic conditions in the so. Guadalupes at ca 11,000 years ago may have been similar to those now existing in the Black Hills of South Dakota (where S. cinereus, C. parva, M. flaviventris, and N. cinerea now sympatric. Need to recheck various specimens— of the ID's are suspect through not checking (apparently) some forms expectable and in other cases not taking full advantage of material.

Age.—14C date of 30 to 40-cm level of Tr. 1 is 11,760 ± 610 (A-1519) on artiodactyl fecal pellets (from adjacent already- excavated trench) (Logan and Black 1979). 10,780 ± 140 (A-1534) on sloth dung; 11,060 ± 180 (A-1584) on sloth dung; 10,750 ± 140 (A-1583) on sloth dung (Spaulding and Martin 1979).
